Letting your dog to walk freely when talking him for a walk, is a really good thing for both of you. He will enjoy a less stressful and controlling experience and you will be able to feel more relaxed. However, you should try to teach him this by taking one step at a time, by being patient and cooperative. Even if your dog might seem reluctant at first, you should know that by a playful, yet serious approach he will easily learn how to walk off the leash.
What should I do in order to train my dog to walk off the leash?
Well, even though this might seem a little bit obvious, you should first teach your dog how to walk with the leash. He will then be prepared for the next level. Using the leash will teach him how to listen to you, to stand by your side and that it is not good for him to stray around. Also, he will learn not to fear or be distracted regardless of the surrounding environment. It would be perfect if he also knows how to walk at heel before proceeding.
The next step would be using a retractable leash. With this type of leash, you should be able to gradually give him more freedom, while praising or gently punishing him depending on his behavior. If he walks around more than he has to, you should immediately cut the distance with the help of the leash. In this way he will learn that, even with freedom, the thing he has to do is stay beside you. Also, it will make him confident that you trust him enough to let him go.
You should then try to walk your dog without any kind of leash in an exposed place, but without many distractions, such as people, cats and so on. For example, go to the park at night or go to an out of town field. Make sure that your dog heels when you call his name and practice this until he is able to properly walk without the leash.
Tips and tricks
You should avoid walking your dog in very crowded places or near the street, even after he learned how to safely walk without a leash. You never know what might scare him and make him venture into the traffic.
Take your time while teaching your dog how to do this. Some dogs learn slowly than others and you should not rush him. Try to enjoy the walks as much as your dog does and always keep an eye on him.
