Train your dog to stop chewing

Your puppy will start chewing on things immediately after his teeth will appear. It is a normal behavior both for a dog and a puppy. You should not aim at training your puppy not to chew at all, but prevent him from doing it on inappropriate things. You should know that a dog cannot tell the difference between an expensive object and a cheap one, if not trained he will just chew on whatever he can.
Why does my dog chew?
Your dog might start chewing on things when bored or lonely or because of the separation anxiety disorder – if you leave home for a long period of time. Also, tiny puppies will chew when teething occurs or when they seek attention. Your dog also might chew when he anticipates your arrival or when in fear. You should teach him not to chew not only for your own peace of mind, but also for the dog’s sake. It might get dangerous for him when being around poisons, electrical wires or sharp objects.
How can I make my dog stop chewing?
You should start the anti chewing training before your dog reaches maturity, when he is just a puppy. You could start with removing all the tempting objects from your house or repositioning them in places that the puppy won’t be able to reach. Also, buy him some nice, chew toys and make it perfectly clear that he is only allowed to chew on those objects. Punish your puppy in a gentle way if he does otherwise. You could also put together a nice place for him to stay in whenever you are not at home. A dog crate or a special room should do it. And do not forget to walk him and play with him as much as you can in your free time. A tired but happy dog will not chew as much as a bored one.
If your puppy has some certain forbidden objects he likes to chew on, you could cover them with a harmless but tasting bad substance. Also put some dog treats around those objects so that his attention would immediately shift. Another solution would be to immediately remove the object from the dog’s mouth when you notice that he is chewing on it and replace it with a treat.
Your dog can really be your best friend and it would be a shame to always get frustrated because of his habits. Make sure to properly train him and you will be able to spend hours and hours of fun together.
