In this way you will feel more relaxed and taking him to a walk, to a vet or just in your backyard, surrounded by friends. You should train you dog to stay after he mastered the down and sit commands, for it will be easier for both of you.
Why should I teach my dog to stay?
Even though some dog trainers think that this command is unnecessary for the sit command already does it, you should know that teaching your dog to sit is very important. He should be able to sit as long as you need him to and that is what this command is for. The best time for this type of training is after your dog had his walk and he is relaxed and calm. It could be a difficult task at first because your dog’s basic instinct is to follow you around; with a little practice and a lot of patience you will be able to teach him how to stay in one place even if you leave for a limited amount of time.
How can I teach my dog to stay?
You should first put your dog in a sitting position, with the appropriate command. If he remains in that position for even two or three seconds, while you are standing in front of him, you should give him a treat. In the mean time, this time interval will enlarge and your dog will understand what you want from him. After this, you should include a verbal command in your practice. Repeat this command after he sits down and reward him if he is maintaining the position. With a lot of practice, your dog will associate your command with what he has done it. If you have reached this point, you now have to add some distractions. For example, you could try at first to take a few steps back and see what happens. Also, after your dog learns how to stay even if you are a few steps away, you could try and go inside your house for a few seconds. This technique will also come in handy if you have to go inside a store and don’t want your dog to stray around.
