You should know that dogs are very sociable and enjoy the presence of both people and other dogs around them. However, you should not forget that they were once wild animals and they used to fight for their own rank. If your dog meets an older or a younger dog there should not be a problem – both of them will behave; but if they both have the same age, they will try to compete for the better status. That is why you should teach your dog how to behave and not be aggressive towards other companions.
How should I prevent my dog from being aggressive towards other dogs?
You should start his training right after he has his vaccinations and you are able to safely take him to walks. You should first make sure that he knows some elementary commands, such as sit, come when asked and so on. Try to expose your puppy to other dogs in different environments and places. This should teach him how to behave and will result in no aggression. Do not forget to give him a treat every time he obeys you; this will make him understand what he is allowed to do and what he is forbidden to do.
Also, when going to a place with lots of dogs try to look out for any aggression signs, such as a loud growl at the other dog, trying to raise his stature, even a slow move towards the possible enemy. You should always remain calm in this situation, for your dog can feel your state of mind and react accordingly. Do not pet him or he will think that he is being rewarded for being aggressive. Take him away from the other dog with the use of simple commands and give him a treat if he obeys.
What if my dog will end up fighting?
Sometimes, even though your dog properly behaves, the other one might not do so. This could happen because of an irresponsible owner, a bad education or even if the other dog has a violent personality. You should know that this could result in a fight and you should be well prepared for this situation. The first step you should take is trying to distract the dogs. You can do this by shouting, making a loud noise or whistling. You could also try throwing some water over them and then command your dog to come to you. This should put the right distance between them and let you leave. It would be best if you would then leave your dog alone for a while in order for him to calm down. You should then check if he has any wounds and take him to a vet if it is the case.
