You should try to housebreak you puppy right after you get him. Puppies are very receptive to this type of training and the good habits they develop will last throughout their maturity. You should make some free time to spend with your new pet because the housebreaking takes a lot of patience and relaxation.
How can I convince my dog to toilet outdoors?
First of all you should know that until your puppy is about twelve weeks old, he will not be able to hold his needs. He is not in control of urinating and defecating and that is why you should take him outside right after he receives his meals. Closely watch for certain signs, such as turning around in circles and restlessness. If you cannot take a few days of vacation you should confine your puppy to a place that you can easily clean up.
You should then be very observant when your puppy urinates or defecates indoors. You should immediately make him understand that what he has done is wrong – not by beating him, but by using a strong and firm voice. Dogs really want to please you and need to understand what their mistakes are. That is why you shouldn’t wait before talking to him or he won’t be able to connect the events. This will make him try to hide when he needs to relieve. Try to use a verbal command when taking him outside. You should also choose a certain spot for him to always use as a toilet. If you repeat the command while taking him to the same spot he should be able to eventually correlate these two things and be able to even go by himself.
How will I know when I should take my dog out?
Puppies usually need to pee about six times a day. After approximately twelve weeks they will also be able to hold it a necessary amount of time. You should be very patient when training your dog to toilet outdoors, for this habit comes with time. Try to convince him that he is only allowed to pee or defecate when being outdoors. Praise him with a treat each time he does the right thing and firmly talk to him when doing it inside. In time your dog will be able to hold it until you come home and take him for a walk. Also leaving him in a crate while being away from home should model his behavior. Dogs do not like peeing where they sleep and that should make him wait for you.
After your dog learns what your command means and where is his private spot, you will be able to tell him to go. He will listen to you and decide if he has to pee or not.
