We all know that dogs are called man’s best friend, and not without a reason. They care for you as much as a normal person would do, or even more. That is why you should take care of your dog as well as you can; the basic training should start when the dog is still a puppy. In this way he will learn faster and be able to properly behave when reaching maturity.
Why does my puppy bite?
Biting is in your puppy’s nature. Right after teething your puppy will start biting and chewing everything he can get his fangs on. Also, this is the way he will be playing with its rubber toys. This natural penchant for biting can be stopped if you take the right measures in due time.
How should I train my puppy against biting?
First of all, give your puppy a lot of toys and prevent him from biting other people in play. Whenever he bites you, try to make a really high noise. Your puppy will instantly know that it hurts you, because they make the same noises when they play with each other. Also, try to ignore him for a few minutes; puppies are really craving attention and in time he will correlate the lack of attention with biting, so he won’t do it anymore.
Also, be careful not take things out of his mouth. That would make your puppy aggressive and he would develop bad habits. As a training method you could use bitter food given to your puppy whenever he bites you. If everything else failed and your puppy does not bite that hard, you can hold his jaw until he understands the point of it.
My puppy is grown up and still bites. What should I do?
In mature dogs the training against biting is a little harder, but not impossible. Whenever your dog bites, you should let out a noisy sound and then chase him. He will know that he has done a bad thing and stop biting after a while. While walking him you should use a muzzle, just in case. When playing with a ball or a stick, do not remove them from your dog’s mouth as soon as he comes to you. Wait until he lets them go and then resume playing.
If you take these tips into consideration, your dog or puppy will let go of the bad habit of biting in no time. However, be very careful not to physically punish him.
