There are various easy tricks that you can teach your dog. You will both benefit from them, you will be amused and your dog will be happy to spend more and more time with you, even if it is a training session. This will also assure you have a stronger and healthier bond and your dog will feel that he can rely on you.
Training your dog to roll over in three simple steps
To begin with, you should always make sure to have many tasty treats at your disposal. Try to buy something new, that your dog doesn’t usually get. In this way, you will increase your dog’s receptivity and make him pay more attention to you. Take already cut treats because they are easier to share.
Secondly, make your dog to stay in the sitting position. Take out a treat from your pocket, bring it to his nose and then down to the ground, carefully moving your hand toward his neck. Offer him another treat for chasing your hand and then go to his back. By moving your hand further he should roll over. Reward him again and at any necessary time. Do not forget to only do this training sessions when you are in a good mood and enthusiastic; a dog is able to feel your state of mind and respond accordingly.
After this previous step is well known and your dog understands what he has to do, try correlation it with a spoken command, such as “Roll over”. Say this before giving the treat to him and in time he will learn to properly respond to your command. You should practice all these steps on a daily basis for a week. After this you should try to reduce the treats until your dog responds automatically. Also, add a new environment so your dog will be able to perform this regardless of his whereabouts.
Tips & tricks
If your dog is not really enthusiastic about food you could try to lure him with his favorite rubber toy or buy a new one that you will only use in this situation.
Your training sessions should only be about five or ten minutes long and be done a few times a day. In this way you will both keep your dog interested and make him expect these sessions as a quality time spent together.
Always have in mind that both you and your dog should have fun during this training. Praise him after every success and never give him a physical punishment.
